The Beauty in the Mundane

I think there is beauty in ordinary life.

In my favorite perfume.
In walks around the neighborhood lake.
In making playlists.
In conversations with my best friend, who also happens to be my sister, Nabe.
In reading a physical book or picking up my Kindle.
In sticky notes tucked between the pages.
In personal Bible study.
In quiet prayers on the balcony, watching the sun rise, appreciating God a little more, and singing Uri Nkuru, Mana.
In study sessions at a coffee shop less than a mile away.
In writing articles.
In geeking out about all things Africa.
In networking and making new friends.
In watching France 24 (African news edition). I’m definitely going to be the kind of parent who makes my kids watch the news.
In tinkering with my little website and remembering how much of a nerd I am.
In putting outfits together before work.
In listening to my dad’s sermons on Sunday evenings.
In getting ready for church on Sundays.
In showing love to the people who pray with my mum (Nibature).
In getting myself flowers and sending flowers to my sisters on the other side of the world, with a little help from my childhood bestie.
In calling Maman Manzi during my coffee breaks at work.

Maybe life is not waiting for the extraordinary to arrive.

Maybe it is already here,
in the people we love,
in the things that bring us joy.
